Three construction projects planned this summer in Commerce

At the monthly Commerce Township Board meeting on April 12, Jason Mayer, PE, Partner, Giffels Webster, presented three projects that will begin in late spring/early summer.

The first project involves improvements to Hickory Glen Park, which include a paved entrance, grading and the installation of mesh asphalt millings for the parking lot and ADA access around the existing concession building. Best Asphalt Inc. of Romulus was awarded the construction contract. Construction should begin in early May and last about a month and a half.

Construction of the Lystek wastewater treatment system is the second project, which is expected to begin in August. As stated previously in Spine, the Lystek program will provide a resource recovery alternative to landfill by producing a Class A biofertilizer from dewatered sludge. The trade received a $2 million federal grant to help fund the $6 million project. The township is also applying for a low-interest loan from the state revolving fund (SRF). That project is expected to kick off in August, and the system should be operational by the end of 2023 at the latest, Mayer said.

The third project is phase one of the Benstein Water Main, which was scheduled to start in 2020 but was put on hold while easements were obtained. One mile of a 20-inch (inside diameter) water main, along with hydrants and gate valves along Benstein Road between Glengary and McCoy, will be installed. Completion of this main will provide redundancy to the Glengary Road water main, which is currently a four-mile dead-end main. Commerce Township is currently divided into two separate water districts served by three Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) feeders. This project will connect the districts so that all water lines in the township are connected to the two million gallon water storage. facility (next to Huron Valley Sinai Hospital.)

“This will connect the third GLWA stream,” Mayer explained. “That makes it one of the most important projects in our water system.”

The first phase of the Benstein Road watermain extension is part of Commerce Township’s 20-year capital improvement plan. DVM Utilities of Sterling Heights won the $2.9 million contract. Phase two will involve Glengary at Sleeth Road, but no further details are available yet. While construction is expected to begin this summer and be completed by the end of the year, Mayer said this project is most dependent on the availability of pipes, valves and fittings to determine the actual schedule.

In fact, with all of these projects, he said he has yet to receive a final schedule from the contractors involved, and the schedule will depend on when the materials are delivered to the sites.
