GURDASPUR: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Saturday laid the foundation stone to upgrade existing capacity from 2,000 TCD to 5,000 TCD in Sugar MillL cooperative, Gurdaspur, at a cost of Rs 413.80 crore.

After laying the foundation stone, the chief minister addressing an assembly said that with increased capacity, the mill would crush 50,000 to 60,000 tonnes of sugarcane daily in addition to providing 20 MW of electricity to the public network. He said the project would be completed at a cost of Rs 413.80 crore, including Rs. 369 crore to be incurred for the installation of plant, machinery and civil works. In addition to this, an ethanol plant with a capacity of 120 KLPD is also being established as tenders have already been launched, the CM said adding that with a capacity of 5,000 TCDs, a 28 MW cogeneration project would also be set up in the plant. He said the mill would not only produce electricity, but also produce sulfur less sugar.

Channi also praised the efforts of local MP Barindermeet Singh Pahra to carry on the legacy of development, thus paving the way for the overall development of the region.

In his speech, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who also owns the portfolio of the Cooperative, informed the CM that the Gurdaspur sugar refinery supplies sugar cane to six factories. Addressing the assembly, Revenue Minister Aruna Chaudhary said it was a historic day for the region as the capacity of this sugar mill has been improving since they had set up a pillar for this purpose during the previous SAD-BJP government. She said that with this revolutionary step in the expansion of the sugar refinery taken by the Channi government would prove to be an important step in the time to come in the region. She also mentioned that the day was not far away when sugar cane producers would start receiving payments for their crop within 24 hours of supplying it to the mill.
