CHARLESTON – The Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal at South Carolina Ports has been named South Carolina Project of the Year 2021 by the South Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

This prestigious award recognizes the complex engineering and construction process behind Phase 1 of the Leatherman Terminal and celebrates the extensive collaboration between the many partners necessary to bring the billion dollar project to fruition.

The state-of-the-art container terminal can efficiently handle the larger ships calling at ports on the east coast. The first phase was completed on budget and ahead of schedule. The terminal processed its first container on March 30 and received its first ship on April 9.

“SC Ports is extremely proud to open the first container terminal in the United States since 2009 in South Carolina, adding capacity to the east coast port market at a time when it is badly needed,” said Jim. Newsome, President and CEO of SC Ports. “The opening of Leatherman Terminal is the culmination of years of effort by our talented team of engineers and project partners. It is their expertise, vision and hard work that made this container terminal a reality.

Project partners had to navigate difficult site conditions and oversee a complicated project while managing multiple contracts and hundreds of people working on the site every day.
