Rochester man dies at construction site after caves in trench near Chile

CHILE, NY (WROC) – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a man died while working a search of a property on Bellaqua Estates Drive in Chile at around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
According to lawmakers, workers at a private company were digging a trench to access an underground sewer when it collapsed, killing the victim.
Responders on the spot tried to save the trapped man from the ravine, but without success.
First responders involved in the salvage operation said the trench was at least 15 feet deep.
The body of the private contractor was found around 5 p.m.
Authorities said the victim was in his 50s. No additional information on his identity is available at this time.
“Due to the nature of the incident, we ask that you please avoid the immediate surroundings for now,” MCSO officials said. “A full investigation is needed before details of the incident are released.”
MCSO continues to work with partnered first responders, which include, but are not limited to: Chili Fire, Gates Fire, Rochester Fire, Monroe County Special Operations, 911 Dispatch, EMS, and OSHA.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement shortly after the incident:
âWe are grateful for this teamwork under extremely emotional and difficult conditions. We also appreciate the specialized teams, multiple resources and equipment that were used during the recovery. MCSO and all responding agencies extend their condolences to the family of the deceased. “
According to the deputies, no stakeholder was injured during the recovery.
