Residents of Red Hook have mixed opinions on the surrounding construction of the upcoming new Amazon fulfillment center in the neighborhood.
For many residents, their main concern is congestion.
There are also concerns about whether the development is good for the community, as it will push mom-and-pop stores to impact jobs and employment.
It will be located on Richard Street and the center is a few yards from IKEA.
David Goldberg of the Red Hook Alliance believes the plan poses health risks.
Goldberg says, “If trucks are in our neighborhood and aren’t moving quickly and stalling, there’s going to be excess fumes.”
In a statement to News 12, Amazon says that as they get closer to launch, they will prioritize hiring the local community for jobs the delivery station creates.
Resident David Gray says: “I am not convinced that they have the best interests of their workers at heart.
It’s still unclear how many jobs this Amazon project will bring and what exactly will be done inside the facility. According to the sign placed outside the construction site, the project is expected to be completed by May 2022.
