New Greene County Jail nears completion, construction remains on schedule

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The new Greene County Jail is nearing completion after crews finished installing several key components in January.

Greene County officials said crews recently completed installing security caps in sleeping quarters, detention tables and evidence lockers. The next phase of construction includes padded cells and several other improvements.

The new prison is under construction near Division Street and Haseltine Road near Springfield-Branson National Airport. The new Greene County jail will have approximately 1,400 beds and will hold double the current capacity of the jail. The current prison was built in 2001.

Moving the jail to this new location also creates an opportunity to move most operations of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office to a single campus. Officials say the redesigned prison could save $95 million in personnel costs compared to the original resolution over the next 20 years due to the use of indirect supervision. The new prison will provide more space to spread out cell modules horizontally rather than vertically.

Executives say the $127 million project is progressing smoothly and construction is on schedule. Crews plan to complete construction in April 2022.
