“RED HORSE is doing major repairs and construction of infrastructure for Air Force bases,” said Captain Matthew Jacobs, officer in charge of 823 RED HORSE Squadron and site manager. “This is the first project undertaken by the newly activated 800th RHG in the Indo-Pacific region. We sent a team here from January through July for an ITTP, or Integrated Troop Training Project, which began work on two new flight line aprons. We are the second group to be here since July to continue the trail expansion project here in Yokota.

These massive new expanses of concrete aprons, where planes are parked, maintained and refueled, will allow Yokota to gain approximately 33% more aircraft support capacity over the course of the multi-year project.

The project provides extensive on-the-job training for RHG Airmen and Yokota’s own 374th Civil Engineer Squadron, ‘Dirt Boys’ section, which helped pave the way for the construction of the apron to begin .

“The RHG forward excavation gave our Airmen extended training time in heavy equipment that would otherwise be infrequently used,” said Master Sgt. Brent Fallon, heavy repair superintendent of 374 Civil Engineer Squadron. “We can use a bulldozer once a year, but the cooperation with this project has our Airmen in the seat all day, every day, for weeks at a time. This is invaluable for proficiency certification, as those with hundreds of hours of practice will be considered a leader in on-the-road training.

After the 374th CES excavated new deck construction areas, the newly arrived RHG team immediately got to work laying 5,200 tonnes of aggregate gravel as a stabilizing foundation, then finished pouring 3,000 cubic meters of concrete or rigid pavement.

RED HORSE squadrons were established in 1965 in response to heavy engineering capacity requirements during the Vietnam War, where they provided an expeditionary capability for rapid base damage repair and airfield construction as a independent unit. Participation in basic construction projects gives Airmen confidence in the skills they will later use to repair or build locations in contested areas.

“We train as if we are fighting, which is why our new Airmen are completing their refresher training by doing these tasks in the field,” said Master Sgt. Further updates to hangars, fuel storage and transportation, runway drainage and painting are also underway, with the deck extension being part of 21 ongoing airfield construction projects that aim to improve the base’s ability to withstand massive influxes of various cells in an emergency scenario.
