The City is moving forward with plans to build a unique recreational space in North Huntsville the community will be able to enjoy it for generations to come.
At its regular meeting Thursday night, the Huntsville City Council approved a $4.6 million construction services contract with Consolidated Construction Company to build Legacy Park near the new Johnson Legacy Center (JLC) on Cecil Fain Drive.
The JLC, a municipal recreation center accessible to members, will complement the planned Legacy Park, which will also be within walking distance of a variety of new single-family homes.
“Combined with the success of the JLC and other new residences and amenities that are popping up in the area, Legacy Park will provide a wonderful space that citizens of all ages can be proud of,” said Huntsville Parks and Recreation Director James Gossett. .
Designed by Bostick Landscape Architects, Legacy Park will include the following:
- New landscaping and sidewalks
- Landscaping and irrigation
- Two pavilions
- An entertainment pavilion with terrace that can accommodate up to 200 people
- Square with monument sign
- 132-space parking lot
- modern playground
The park will also feature a concrete slab for a future National Fitness Campaign (NFC) fitness court.® facility. NFC fitness court® is an innovative outdoor bodyweight circuit training facility created to improve the quality of life in cities, schools, parks and trails across America.
Designed for adults of all ages and abilities, every fitness ground® provides a free full body workout in just seven minutes. Users will be able to cycle through the seven fitness courts® zones, leveraging their body weight at different angles and resistance levels to improve performance over time.
The installation is a collaboration between NFC, the City of Huntsville and Arts Huntsville. Local artists will have the chance to compete for space on the structure through the Huntsville Public Art Program.
Work will begin at Legacy Park on Pueblo Drive within 10 calendar days of issuance of the notice to proceed and will take no longer than 270 days.
District 1 City Council Member Devyn Keith will host a community meeting for Jaguar Hills and surrounding areas to discuss the final plans for Legacy Park on Tuesday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. at JLC, 6000 Cecil Fain Drive.
“The new Legacy Park will be a game changer for North Huntsville,” he said. “Seeing the Johnson High School campus come to life in a new way is already paying dividends for our community.”
