Two nonprofits this week opened a 145-unit affordable apartment complex less than a half-mile from National City’s City Hall.

The urban village-style Kimball Highland apartments are developed by Community HousingWorks in partnership with San Ysidro Health and the city.

“The groundbreaking for Kimball Highland reinforces National City’s commitment to creating an age-friendly community by recognizing the unique needs that all walks of life can have,” said Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis.

She said the project will include “quality housing and excellent services that meet the diverse needs of our families and seniors while respecting the community culture of our national city.”

The new apartments will rent from $660 per month to $2,300 per month for qualified individuals with annual incomes between $27,330 and $63,770. Floor plans include studios and apartments with 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms.

The project is adjacent to Community HousingWorks’ renovated Kimball Tower and Morgan Tower seniors’ apartments, and close to shopping and the Blue Line light rail.

San Ysidro Health will open a 44,000 square foot health center providing all-inclusive care for elderly patients on the property. The $50 million center will serve approximately 20,000 National City residents each year.

Founded in 1988, Community HousingWorks is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that develops and operates affordable apartment communities throughout California. San Ysidro Health operates a network of clinics across San Diego County providing affordable medical and dental care.
