AEM Recognizes Construction and Utility Safety Efforts with OSHA on First Day of Underground Worker Safety Demonstration

The EAJ recently welcomed more than 40 officials from US Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and offered first-hand insight into how equipment manufacturers design products with worker safety in mind.

The first Underground Worker Safety Demonstration Day, held June 2 at BF Joy, a Washington, DC-area utility contractor located in Hyattsville, Maryland, focused on: locating utility lines, horizontal directional drilling, vacuum excavation, contractor safety programs, and trench safety from an equipment and contractor perspective.

“AEM is committed to proactively responding to regulatory issues affecting the construction and utility sectors, and events such as this provide a particularly valuable and effective forum for building working relationships with agencies. regulations to benefit the equipment manufacturing industry and the customers it serves,” said AEM Vice President, Construction and Utilities John Somers.

The stations featured equipment and experts from several AEM member companies, including Ditch Witch, Subsite, TRUVAC, US Radar and Vermeer. Additional amenities provided by Sunbelt Rentals and United Rentals were also on hand.

Several partner associations also played a key role in the success of the event: Associated General Contractors (AGC), Distribution Contractors Association (DCA), American Pipeline Contractors Association (APCA), Common Ground Alliance (CGA), National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), Power & Communications Contractors Association (PCCA) and North America Excavation Safety Association (NAXSA).

“AEM hosted seven demo days for regulators in the United States and Canada who work in the agricultural sector,” said Nick Tindall, AEM’s Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs. “This was AEM’s first CE-focused event, and it will serve as a model for us moving forward.”
