Abbate, Bram and their team honored for academics



TROY, NY – The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) announced its 2021 academic awards and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was well represented with two student-athletes and the winning team. Elders Chris Abbey and Jason bram were both named Scholar All-American, while the engineers as a group won an academic team award.

Rensselaer, who is driven by Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh, had a GPA of 3.58 for the spring semester of 2021, which brought her GPA to 3.43. Of the 55 members, 49 had at least a 3.0 and 30 had a 3.5 or better. Eleven student-athletes had a perfect GPA of 4.0 between January and May. Cumulatively, 46 have a 3.0 or more with 26 over 3.49 and four with 4.0.

Abbate (Northport, NY / Northport Senior), now a field engineer with Hensel Phelps in Washington, DC, rolled a 3.41 after a semester in which he rolled a 3.77. A civil engineering graduate with a concentration in structural engineering, he attended the National Society of Leadership and Success and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has also conducted research in the civil engineering department and completed internships at Judlau Contracting (2020) and Bohler Engineering (2019) as well as RMS Engineering (2015-18), the latter two as a design engineer. A Rensselaer Leadership Award, Abbate has been an active volunteer with various organizations while being part of the Rensselaer community.

On the field, he played 21 games with two goals and an assist, eight shots (5 on goal), 27 balls on the ground and 10 caused turnovers as a long stick midfielder. Each of his points has come in three games this year. (The 2021 season has been truncated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)

Midfielder Bram (Reading, PA / The Hill School) had 50 points (34 goals, 16 assists) with 136 shots (70 on goal) and 24 balls on the ground in 40 games. He was selected to participate in the North-South game after collecting 14 points (8 goals) in four games as a senior.

The double major in Business and Management and Economics got involved in the Rensselaer Automotive Club and did an internship at Ayco (development of strategic relationships). He will be attending Columbia University for a Masters in Applied Mathematics and will work with The Morgan Reed Group as a quantitative trading intern.
